Heads Up β€” Exam Format Update The PMP exam format is scheduled to change on July 9, 2026. All resources, tips, and exam information on this page are based on the exam structure prior to that date. If you are preparing to sit for the exam after July 9, 2026, verify current exam content and structure directly with PMI.org before using these materials as your sole guide.

PMP Exam Preparation

David McLachlan has a fantastic way of breaking down terms and exam scenarios. These are the exact videos I used β€” exclusively β€” to prepare for both my PMP and PMI-ACP exams.

πŸ’‘ My Strategy
I passed my PMP exam after only 4 days of studying. It's ALL about strategy, not cramming. Watch David McLachlan's videos, join Gabor Stramb's free study group, and read the Agile Manifesto. That's the formula.

Essential Resources

Use current, official information. Don't waste time on outdated materials β€” the exam has changed and your prep should reflect that.

Exam Day Tips

The mindset and approach that carries you through 230 minutes and 180 questions.

Mindset & Approach
1
You are a servant leader β€” someone who prioritizes the well-being and growth of their team above all, with collaboration, empathy, and the needs of others at the center.
2
Never push work onto others or your project sponsor. It is your responsibility to manage and handle issues. The exam will test this constantly.
3
Communications is always valued. When in doubt, choose the answer that involves communicating proactively with stakeholders.
4
Pay attention to what the story problem is asking. If it mentions Agile, answer accordingly. If it mentions Waterfall or predictive, answer accordingly. Context is everything.
5
If you don't know the answer in a timely manner β€” mark it for review and move on. Don't lose minutes on one question.
6
It is not necessary to memorize all knowledge areas and processes in PMBOK 6 for this exam. Focus your energy wisely.
Key Concepts to Master
β†’
Understand the difference between Agile (adaptive) and Waterfall (predictive). Many questions hinge on recognizing which context you're in.
Approach
Incremental
Breaking the project into small, manageable parts delivered in sequential phases. Each phase allows for partial implementation and feedback.
Approach
Iterative
Repeating cycles of development, refining and improving the project each iteration based on feedback. Focuses on flexibility and continuous enhancement.

PMP Exam Structure

Know the format before you sit down. No surprises, no wasted time.

230
Minutes to Complete
That's 3 hours and 50 minutes to work through 180 questions. Pacing matters β€” roughly 1.3 minutes per question.
2
Scheduled Breaks
First break after Q1–60. Second after Q61–120. Once you start a break, you cannot return to questions from the previous section.
3Γ—
Attempts Allowed
If you don't pass on your first attempt, you may retake up to 3 times within your one-year eligibility period.
⚠ Important Note on Breaks
Once you review your responses and begin your break, you cannot return to questions from the previous section of the exam. Review all flagged questions before confirming you're ready to break. This is non-negotiable β€” plan accordingly.
